Artist's Description
HOOT
This is an Eurasian Eagle Owl; Bubo bubo. I photographed this Owl at a Harley-Davidson event where handlers were displaying several raptor species.
The Eurasian Eagle-Owl is a species of eagle owl that is a resident to much of Eurasia. The Eagle Owl is a very large and powerful bird, smaller than the Golden Eagle but larger than the Snowy Owl. It is sometimes referred to as the world's largest owl. The great size, bulky, barrel-shaped build, ear tufts and orange eyes make this a distinctive species. The Eagle Owl is largely nocturnal in activity, as are most owl species. This species mainly feeds on small mammals such as rats, mice and rabbits but can take on fully grown foxes and young deer if taken by surprise. This species usually nests on cliff ledges, crevices and caves. The Eagle Owl can live for up to 20 years in the wild. They have no natural predators. The leading causes of death for this species are man-made.
